A point spread in sports is a way for oddsmakers to make a matchup between two unbalanced teams more balanced by giving points to or taking points away from each team. Let's say a spread for an NFL game is released at 3.5 points. A flurry of public money comes in on one side of the coin. Oddsmakers respond by raising the spread up to 4 points. So why did the spread tick up? In this case, we can interpret it to mean that a good amount of money came in on the favorite minus the points. For a favorite, it means winning by more than the spread amount of points. For an underdog, it means either winning, or losing by fewer than the spread amount of points. If a team covers the spread, people who bet on it win, people who bet against it lose. If it doesn't cover, then the reverse is true.
Zak: Alright dude, give me ten minutes, I need to go to the bathroom and beat the spread before it starts.
